the plantations in Malaysia

Living

Spent a few nights in a village in the Sepang district of the state of Selangor; yes I am talking about Malaysia.

Sepang is filled with plantations, many growing palm oil trees. Vast acres of forests were cleared to make way for these plantations, led by corporations and government-tied institutions. Poverty runs amok among many plantation workers, regardless of their Malaysian ethnicity or whether they are from South Asia or some parts of south east asia.

Regardless, people living in poverty in many other states of Malaysia. The Institutions that are given the mandate to nurture the people have instead maintained the poverty (or caste system) of these small populations. Yes, I meant in Malaysia.
