An observer to those living in hardship

Regardless of the infamous stories of violence and gang-controlled territories, I wandered the streets of Bangkok with little caution; not really caring where I went as long as it was not near the business centre. Based on my work exposure with marginalised communities, I do not fear the slums nor their notorious reputation. I show respect for the people and their way of live, admiring that in desperate times one takes desperate measures to survive.

It is amazing to see the sights, absorbing everything especially meeting people pushed into a miserable existence, courtesy of poverty and a caste system that discriminate those based one’s income and social-status.

An avid blogger, twitterer and photojournalist, Zashnain Zainal suffers from an incurable addiction to social work, helping marginalised communities since 1989. Nowadays he travels from the plantations of Malaysia to the slums of Thailand. He can be found at and @bedlamfury
